State parks are great places for birthday parties, reunions, weddings, and more. Learn more about event permits and fees on the Facilities page. Park staff lead regularly scheduled interpretive programs that allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. Most events are free, though some may require pre-registration.

Where is Chimney Rock State Park?

Try the Opera Box for one of the best vistas in the park, or the base of a waterfall for a more wet and wild experience. Scattered across the Chimney Rock access road, you’ll find many picnic tables and grills for enjoying a snack or a meal with a beautiful backdrop. Also, the entire Village of Chimney Rock is set right at the park’s base and offers its enticing array of adorable shops, cafes, and restaurants to try out. The two main areas on the entrance road will offer all of the facilities here. The Old Rock Cafe can be found right at the state park entrance.

It also happens to be the hub for many of the amenities in the park. Earley, who investigated the incident, said the family had just moved to Charlotte four days earlier from Michigan. They were on a family outing for the day and were hiking on "Cliff Trail," one of the park's main trails. Before anyone noticed, the girl worked her way around the opposite side of a barricade, Earley said. The Four Seasons Trail takes you off the beaten path from the lower parking lot and up through the forests.

From East Asheville

Please be prepared to make alternate plans if the parking area is full upon arrival. This trail can only be accessed by hiking the entirety of the Exclamation Point Trail. This trail, located inside the Chimney Rock attraction, allows visitors to climb to the top of Chimney Rock. The Outcroppings Trail offers a series of staircases and lookout points threaded through a near-vertical boulder field. They also offer courses with expert instructors from Fox Mountain Guides on these routes, if you’re looking to learn for the first time or simply improve.

One, more strenuous than the other, is a climb up 500 manmade steps. The other, much more manageable, is an elevator ride to a shorter set of stairs of only 44. Chimney Rock State Park is set just southeast of the cultural city of Asheville. It’s nestled right on the edge of the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains within western North Carolina.

Visitors can take a swim or float on the water, build sandcastles, or picnic with family and friends. There are a few moderate uphill sections and a small set of stairs at the base of the falls, so we don’t suggest this for strollers or wheelchairs. This trail can be accessed only by hiking the Weed Patch Mountain Trail for about three-fourths of a mile. Eagle Rock access, located at 1911 Shumont Road in Black Mountain, is free to access, but there is currently limited parking.

Check their online calendar full of upcoming excitements to see if there’s something that matches the time frame of your visit to Chimney Rock. Chimney Rock State Park often hosts seasonal and community events. This includes guided hikes, educational programs, and special happenings like the Llamapalooza, the Full Moon Series or Yoga at Sunrise. The lot has been recently renovated and provides convenient and safe parking with enough space for everyone.

I think this is a relatively moderate hike up to the top – 499 steps to the top – which my 76 year old father and 69 year old mother managed just fine. The number one thing to do here is to climb to the top of the rock on the Chimney Rock hike. In 2006, the “World’s Edge” land was added to the park, making it a total of 1,568-acres. It was discovered by Lucius B. Morse who opened it as a private park in 1902.

Located less than two hours west of Charlotte, Chimney Rock State Park offers different hiking trails that can lead to many rockhounding opportunities. The Hickory Nut Falls Trail is a 0.7-mile one-way trail (1.4 miles round trip) that will lead you straight to the base of the waterfall. The hike is relatively moderate and doable for small children. There are multiple picnic benches and places to rest along the trail and enjoy the views. From an overlook point, the land falls away to provide views of the Piedmont. Transfer of the World's Edge tract to state ownership was completed in 2006.

Fees are charged for group climbing, certain event permits, and facility reservations. We absolutely love exploring Hendersonville and think it’s another wonderful base for visiting Chimney Rock State Park. You’ll enjoy all the fun things to do in and around this small town. After a long day of exploring the park, you’ll likely be looking for a place to eat. There are picnic areas scattered throughout the park, including a few tables near the Four Seasons Trailhead, the Animal Discovery Den, and the Hickory Nut Falls Trail. Find more information about two-hour, half-day, or full-day rock climbing sessions here.

We also love this experience for inexperienced rockhounders, and those with young families who have children with an interest in rocks, minerals and crystals. Many rare and unusual rocks and minerals have been found in this area including samarskite, uranophane, and hyalite opal. We love that this is a way for rockhounders to dig in an area that they know they will find some minerals, instead of having to venture into areas that might not have anything.

You can climb in the park all year round, weather permitting, and it’s a very family-friendly activity. The youngest age for this activity is 6-years-old, so the whole family can do it. The spectacular view of the waterfall is totally worth it. From Charlotte it’s a 2-hour drive, from our home in Raleigh it’s 4 hours, and it’s only a 5-minute drive from one of our favorite places to visit in North Carolina, Lake Lure. Don’t worry though, it’s completely worth it once you reach the top.

I paid extra to have more legroom and it is definitely worth it for a six hour flight. I would’ve paid for a decent dinner, but they didn’t offer anything but a snack box —not good for six hours. Honestly, I didn’t expect that I will experience this long time wait during the check in. There was only one person who was taking care of the passengers for the economy class and it took us to wait about one hour to do our check i. As a result we barely get to the airplane as the gate was at the end of the airport. That is totally not professional where one crue is working at the registration desk with economy and 3-4 crues are helping for the business class.

The plane was old and you are required to connect your own device to their Wi-Fi rather than have entertainment options in the back of the seat in front of you. The Wi-Fi went out during the flight and there was only one plug for the devices every two seats. Three out of five surrounding my family did not work. The seats and spaces under them were so small I could not fit my backpack, which I’ve always brought on flights and fit before no problem. The crew were unpleasant and patronizing.

The guy with severe body odor sat next to me. For the whole duration of the flight it was a torture. The airline should have better policy on limiting people with bad body odor to board the flight. Passengers should not be the ones to endure bad odor for the whole duration of the flight. The airline should be e the one to ensure decent air quality for ever passenger. Temperature in the plane was quite warm for the entire flight - actually just outright hot making for an unoleay4 hours.

I've never seen the airport as bad in regards to security lines and wait. (For not being a holiday) A lot of folks missed their flight this morning. But wasnt offered a beverage somehow. No worries but some how I missed it.

The check in process was laborious and the check in agent didn't seem to know how to manage the process efficiently and was confused about how to check in my son's sports equipment. The baggage fees were outrageous and so expensive. And $200 additional for 2 check ins.

The text told me it was changed to Terminal E and Gate D5. But with no one on site to ask questions there was confusion on where to go as all the gates were E's. Then we took the skyline to the D area. We left to get something to eat. No announcement was made but my daughter happened to asked and they told her our gate was moved to D12.

And while officers prepare for danger, shootings are unavoidable because officers can’t predict how a suspect will react. All it takes is “a high-caliber weapon (and a) person with really evil intentions,” he said. The tragedy underscores the limits of even the best-trained officers and the unpredictability of the alleged criminals being served. He refused to pay this extra $50 charge and tried to do check-in online by himself but it seemed to be late with only 7 mins left. It ended up that my daughter and my husband missed the 7-minute time window. They had to take the next non-direct flight which took more than 12 hours from Las Vegas to San Francisco, a very poor experience for them. I had trouble finding a boarding pass because I had an hour between Flights and American did not see my flight I believe because I was ticketed through KAYAK. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

The process of buying the ticket and navigating all the hidden charges that Frontier throws at you was a terrible experience. The actual airport experience and flying was fine. Uncomfortable seats with no recline. Very professional, knowledgeable flight attendants. Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

Crew either couldn’t or wouldn’t do anything about it. All passengers were commenting on how hot it was. Bag drop off was slow and annoying.

"These are people that cared deeply about what they've done for our profession, and now today, we have to say to them how much we are grateful for what they have done," Lyles said. Beside the house, in a somewhat lower level, a swimming pool reflects its structure. The Kaufmann House is one of the most famous buildings by Neutra, who was a key figure of the modernist architecture movement. He was lauded for designing homes that were tailored to the warm California climate, using ample glazing, boxy constructions, light facades, and outdoor living areas. It is one of the most important examples of International Style architecture in the United States and the only one still in private hands.

The home was commissioned by Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., a Pittsburgh department store tycoon as a desert retreat from harsh winters. A decade earlier, Kaufmann commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build Fallingwater in Pennsylvania. This five-bedroom, five-bathroom vacation house in Palm Springs, California was designed to emphasize connection to the desert landscape while offering shelter from harsh climatic conditions. The influence of the Kaufmann House extends beyond its immediate visual and spatial attributes; it has permeated various realms of culture and design.

The Kaufmann House has gone through several owners after the Kaufmann’s owned the house, which led to the house to fall in disrepair and a lack of concern and preservation of the modern dwelling. However, a couple that appreciated 20th Century modern homes restored the house back to its original luster with the help of Julius Shulman. The Kaufmann House is now considered to be an architectural landmark and one of the most important houses in the 20th Century.

The gloriette, a serene outdoor room above the house, was Richard Neutra’s creative way of bypassing zoning codes that forbade two-story structures.

this earth day, designboom revisits the year's top examples of passive architecture

“Legend has it that Mr. Neutra had the pool built first so he could stand in it to cool off while directing construction during the hot Palm Springs summers,” Sotheby’s Bisignano explains. "The home that inspired the iconic images of Julius Shulman and Slim Aarons is an investment in one of the world's most important treasures of modernism." In 2008, the property was named as one of the best houses in Los Angeles by the Los Angeles Times. The rear facade of the house opens to the landscape and garden, while the facade overlooking the street appears closed, with its facade of ashlar stone. Kauffman visited Taliesin West, the summer study of Wright, located in the middle of Arizona, but was not particularly impressed. Weekly updates on the latest design and architecture vacancies advertised on Dezeen Jobs.

However, while still an enthusiast of Wright’s work, Edgar wanted a lighter feeling than their Fallingwater home and felt Neutra could deliver. A decade earlier he employed well-known architect Frank Lloyd Wright to build his Pittsburgh home known as Fallingwater. At its eastern end, the narrow strips are continuing a stretch, so that the excess rainwater can flow to the east and dropped onto the rocks. The gargoyles are an architectural element known in Japanese gardens as in medieval cathedrals. Neutra and the modernization became a “leap of water” that is a tribute to the distant Falling Water House Bear Run. Although one wing of the house sits on an east-west axis, the other sits perpendicular or to the cardinal directions to expand the areas of residence.

The collaboration between the client and architect was grounded in a mutual appreciation for cutting-edge design and technological advancement, setting the stage for creating a landmark in modernist architecture. Richard Neutra, an emblematic figure of 20th-century Architecture, excelled in blending technology, aesthetics, and the nuances of the natural environment into his designs. Among his illustrious works, the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, California, is the quintessential example of his approach to modernist architecture. Designed by architect Richard Neutra for department store king Edgar J. Kaufmann in 1946 the Southern California home has a history of famous owners, including musician Barry Manilow.

In this plan, outdoor living areas are sheltered by adjustable walls composed of movable vertical fins that offer flexible protection against sandstorms. When the windscreens are not required, louvers can be adjusted to open up to the views. This five-bedroom, five-bathroom vacation house in Palm Springs, California, was designed to emphasize connection to the desert landscape while offering shelter from harsh climatic conditions. Large sliding glass walls open the living spaces and master bedroom to adjacent patios.

Even designed with right angles, the forms of the house are very smooth; yet the severe winds of northeast Palm Springs still blow everything they can get a hold of, despite improvements to the walls and blinds. The Kaufmann House distills space in the silver-plated horizontal planes that rest atop transparent glass panes. The unique sharp vertical feature is the chimney located next to the “public square”, as Neutra called it.

Square footage expanded, the courtyard was covered, and air conditioning was added to the roof—but as a consequence of those "improvements," the house began to crumble and lose its soul. Material choices in the Kaufmann House also reflect Neutra’s innovative approach to architecture. He employed lightweight steel for the framework, which allowed for slender yet strong supports, and used native stone and glass extensively to enhance the connection to the environment. The integration of these materials was not only aesthetically striking but also functionally significant, aiding in the thermal comfort of the residence through passive cooling techniques that were ahead of their time. From the center point, each wing branching out has its own specific function; the most important features are oriented east/west, while the supporting ones are oriented north/south. Additionally, the Harrises were able to have a long-closed section of a Utah quarry reopened, in order to mine matching stone material destined to replace what had been removed or damaged.

After purchasing the house and its more than an acre of land for about $1.5 million, the Harrises removed the extra appendages and enlisted two young Los Angeles-area architects, Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, to restore the Neutra design. When Brent and Beth Harris first saw the Kaufmann House, it was neither a pretty palace nor an obvious candidate for restoration. Strikingly photographed in 1947 by Julius Shulman, it stood vacant for several years after Kaufmann’s death in 1955. Then it went through a series of owners, including the singer Barry Manilow, and a series of renovations. Along the way, a light-disseminating patio was enclosed, one wall was broken through for the addition of a media room, the sleek roof lines were interrupted with air-conditioning units, and some bedrooms were wallpapered in delicate floral prints. Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. (1885–1955) and Liliane Kaufmann (1889–1952), Neutra’s clients, had been patrons of modern art and architecture for many years, mainly in the Midwest, where they owned a department store in Pittsburgh.

This technique allows the eye to travel from the inside to the outside with minimal interruption, visually connecting the two spaces. Palm Springs, California undoubtedly has some of the most lavish and beautiful homes in North America. A visit there is like being transported back to the Golden Age of Hollywood where you may just find Bing Crosby playing a round of golf or Marilyn Monroe sipping a martini by the pool. The area has remained landmarks of historical, modern architecture, and the Kaufmann Desert House (or simply “Kaufmann House”) is no exception. The garden permeates almost inadvertently throughout the house with smooth oscillations.

An extreme privacy is guaranteed both to the hosts, as the children, guests, and servants. The only coexistence between them occurs in the shaded walkways, terraces and courtyards. Blinds that flank a long dark pool connect the guest wing with the rest of the house. The lounge area, shared with the dining room and more or less square, is at the center of the house. The plan in the form of cross guarantees that the four wings get both daylight and good ventilation. The large sliding windows, whose bronze-colored blinds alleviated the silvery glow of the house, lead to an open, adjacent courtyard in the living room and in the master bedroom, open to the pool.

Integrating outdoor living spaces and balconies was a consistent theme in Neutra’s past work. The gloriette is accessed from an outdoor flight of stairs that touches down in the central courtyard. • Kaufmann House, originally designed in 1946 by architect Richard Neutra, was built for the same client who commissioned Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Architects worldwide have extracted principles from this building throughout the course of history. The house still stands today and is considered one of the essential pieces of 20th-century architecture among projects such as Fallingwater, Robie House, Gropius House, and Gamble House. This allowed home inhabitants to walk from the interior to the exterior without sensing a temperature change on the floor. They would feel as though they were on the same surface even after crossing the glass line and over to the exterior hardscape slab. In 1946 Edgar Kaufmann commissioned Richard Neutra to design a winter vacation home in Palms Springs, California. A decade earlier, he hired Frank Lloyd Wright to design his renowned Fallingwater house.

The Kaufmann Desert House by Richard Neutra

kaufmann desert house

The Kaufmanns used the house mainly as their winter residence, relocating to Palm Springs during the colder months. After 1964 two subsequent owners altered the house, increasing the square footage from approximately 3,200 square feet to just over 5,100 square feet, which compromised the original design. In 1993, the house’s current owner hired Los Angeles architectural firm Marmol and Radziner to return the house to its original state by relying on many painstakingly researched original materials and production processes. The Kaufmann House achieved iconic status through its architectural innovation and the lens of Julius Shulman, one of the most influential architectural photographers of the 20th century. Shulman’s photographs of the house, particularly the striking image taken at twilight with the interior lit and the pool reflecting the house and sky, have become defining images of modernist architecture.

To the west, a kitchen, service spaces, and staff quarters are reached by a covered breezeway. In the northern wing, another open walkway passes along an exterior patio, leading to two guest rooms. From the street, the house looks beautifully layered with floating planes that rise in elevation as you move west. Wanting to capture more views at a higher elevation, Neutra designed the gloriette as an open-air perch on top of the house, covered by a roof and shading devices on two sides.

RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIORS (

It wasn’t until 1993, when Brent and Beth Harris, a financial executive and an architectural historian, moved in that there was an attempt to bring the Neutra house back to its original splendor piece by piece. The result is a striking, sculptural layout resembling a pinwheel with various wings radiating from the central living and dining room. Throughout, there is a strong connection between the indoors and outdoors, reinforced through large swaths of glazing and shade-inducing vertical aluminum louvers that are also one of the home’s highlights. Richard Neutra, a Vienna-born architect, brought a unique blend of European modernism and Californian innovation to his projects.

While Beth Harris may have moved to Los Angeles, many feel her heart has stayed behind in Palm Springs. Her former husband Brent also continues to actively support preservation activities in Palm Springs and is currently restoring a Welton Becket-designed home in the historic Tennis Club neighborhood. In 1996, the house was designated a historic site by the Palm Springs Historic Site Preservation Board.

AD Classics: Kaufmann House / Richard Neutra

The way in which Neutra designed the Kaufmann House was such that when the sliding glass doors were opened the differentiation of interior and exterior was blurred as if it was a sinuous space. The Harrises purchased the home for US$1.5 million, then sought to restore the home to its original design. Neutra had died in 1970, and as the original plans were not available, the couple brought to Los Angeles architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner to restore the house.

Modern Tours Palm Springs

To continue their efforts of preservation, they decided to put the house for auction at Christie's auction for high profile, contemporary, art. They believed that only serious buyers interested in continuing the preservation of this historical site would purchase the house at an auction. The house sold at auction for 19.1 million dollars by an anonymous buyer but later fell out of escrow. Unfortunately, only glimpses of it can be seen from the street including its famous ‘gloriette’ roof deck. In the north wing another corridor opens along an outside patio that leads to two other rooms.

Following the end of World War II, he was commissioned for the Kaufmann house, and it later became a beloved piece of the renowned International Style architecture he was known for. The variety of spaces, ranging from enclosed to semi-enclosed to open, transcends any traditional distinction between indoors and outdoors in favor of a continuous, human-made environment. Moreover, the new environment was designed so that its occupants could fine-tune its features for physical comfort, most notably the radiant heating and cooling systems for the concrete surfaces of the outside terraces. Lastly, within the hostile desert surroundings the new environment was to be a safe one as exemplified by the mirrors Neutra installed in unexpected places, which allowed the inhabitants to scan their immediate surroundings. Neutra used as basic materials stone, glass and steel, and tended not to depart from the range of colors than the desert offered, so that the house does not desentonase of their natural environment.

Completed in 1946, the Kaufmann Desert House was an instant sensation, and soon the five-bedroom, five-bathroom vacation house became an important catalyst that kick started the post war surge of Modernist architecture in and around Palm Springs. Inside the home, the main floor layout is centered around a living and dining room with its floor-to-ceiling windows and brick-fronted fireplace. The master suite, additional bedrooms and service wing are along adjoining corridors or covered walkways. After Kaufmann's death in 1955, the property cycled through a number of high-profile owners, including Barry Manilow and former San Diego Chargers owner Eugene Klein.

Eight mid-century houses that prove Palm Springs is a modernist mecca

Following Edgar Kaufmann's death in 1955, his desert house sold to Francis C. Park, who in turn sold it in 1962 to art dealer Joseph Linsk and his wife Nelda. Ft. of interior space by converting a patio into a media room; a wall was removed so the newly enclosed space could open into the original living room; additional air conditioning was placed on the roof that cluttered the roof planes. The south wing connects to the public realm and includes a carport and two long covered walkways. These walkways are separated by a massive stone wall and led to public and service entries, respectively. The east wing of the house is connected to the living space by a north-facing internal gallery and houses a master bedroom suite.

The war moratoriums were slowly lifted as World War II ended, but relatively strict building regulations remained enforced. However, Neutra was able to find his way around the restrictions by breaking ground on the foundation a few days before the official enforcement. The project resulted in a total cost of nearly $300,000, surpassing the current single-family residence average of $40,000. Neutra’s work is notable for its ability to blur the boundary between inside and outside. In the Kaufmann House, this is done with walls that run from the interior to the exterior clad in the same stone material.

Much was made of Neutra's skirting of local ordinances that prohibited second stories, but similar upper-level sleeping porches were commonplace in the desert. They were often included in early Spanish-style homes that, in pre-air conditioning days, had sleeping porches (or gloriettes) that caught the evening breeze and allowed locals to sleep outdoors during the hottest summer months. The origins of the house are familiar to architecture fans because of the pedigree of its owner, Edgar Kaufmann, the Pittsburg department store magnate. Kaufmann meant no disrespect to Wright, but he sought a home more open and airy than anything in Wright's vocabulary.

Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House in Palm Springs was designed and built in 1946–1947, although some sources claim that the preparatory contact between client and architect occurred in 1945. The house exemplifies Neutra’s approach to designing a house and its surroundings as a single, continuous environment, a concept he had begun to work with in the early 1940s. Other examples are Neutra’s Nesbitt House (1942, Los Angeles) and the Tremaine House (1945–1948, Montecito). The Kaufmann House is an early example, and one of the clearest, of a post–World War II southern Californian modernism that closely integrates the building with its environment. For Neutra, however, the house also symbolized a universal type of dwelling for difficult-to-settle environments. The south wing comprises two covered walkways separated by a massive stone wall, while another open path leads north past a patio to a pair of guest bedrooms.

When the Harrises decided to end their marriage, they faced a dilemma regarding the disposition of the house. Both were clear that the house required a special buyer who would fully appreciate its cultural significance and provide the kind of maintenance such a property requires. They hit upon a seemingly perfect solution -- they offered the house at auction as a piece of art. A precedent had already been set with the 2003 Sotheby's auction of Mies van der Rohe's innovative Farnsworth house which sold for $7.5 million. The Harrises went with Christies who put a pre-auction estimate for the house at $15-25 Million.

Major outdoor rooms are enclosed by a row of movable vertical fins that offer flexible protection against sandstorms and intense heat. Located at 470 West Vista Chino in Palm Springs, California, this masterpiece of architecture was designed to connect residents and visitors to the beautiful surrounding desert, letting the outside in and vice versa. The two-story, five-bedroom, five-bathroom, home was built in a pinwheel design with low horizontal planes that bring the house closer to the desert landscape, giving the illusion that it is floating amongst the mountains. This illusion is emphasized by the use of sliding glass doors that open up to the walkways and patios. The effect the glass doors give to the Kaufman House is that when they are opened, the interior and exterior become a singular flowing space. The Desert House stands in the northern part of Palm Springs, where the lower slopes of Mount Jacinto meet the plain of the Coachella Valley.

The house’s swimming pool is one of the most iconic and recognizable aspects of the Kaufmann House; however, it is not solely a photographic gem or simply a recreational feature. The swimming pool creates a compositional balance of the overall design of the house. The house alone is unbalanced and heavy as the wings are not equally proportioned, but with the addition and placement of the swimming pool there is a cohesive balance and harmony throughout the design.

Plattsmouth mourns mother and son presumed dead

charlotte schilling

'I just about went to my knees,' said the family's neighbor, Naomi Raposo, 50, describing her reaction to news of the deaths. She just found out Tuesday, not realizing that earlier reports of bodies being found were about Schilling and her son. "Outside of our circle of friends, it hasn't been a real pleasant experience in Boston," Schilling told USA Today. "So we're just trying to find a place to live out our lives with happiness with people that are nice, and Tennessee is it." Plattsmouth police Sunday had yet to find a mother and son who were apparently last seen Thursday. Meyers said some of the items that were purchased at the convenience store were found partially consumed near the bodies in the woods.

According to Council Bluffs police, Charlotte Schilling attempted suicide by the same method in November. Friends told investigators that her recent behavior indicated actions consistent with someone contemplating suicide. Charlotte and Owen Schilling were reported missing on May 10. Nebraska mom strangled son, herself in woods at Iowa park, police say

PLATTSMOUTH -- Residents of Plattsmouth on Monday didn’t need official word from the FBI in reflecting on the lives of Charlotte and Owen Schilling. Lindsay Schilling said her mother often surprised them with adventures like road trips and days at the zoo, but the adventures never lasted long and her mother always calls. A passer-by discovered the bodies Sunday evening in a wooded area about a quarter of a mile from a boat ramp that runs into the Missouri River near the state park. Police had found Schilling's vehicle at Lake Manawa State Park Schilling's wallet and cellphone were found in the car, a half-mile from where the bodies were later discovered. Investigators believe the bodies of Charlotte and Owen Schilling had likely been lying in the woods near Lake Manawa since May 10 when Schilling checked Owen out of Wade Robin Elementary School in Bellevue, Neb. Her family grew worried when neither she nor Owen returned home, and Schilling's cellphone went unanswered. "Individually, each one of these people probably wouldn't have known anything was different," he said. "When you put it all together and look at it, it paints a pretty clear picture of someone who is contemplating suicide." The night before the woman and boy went missing, another neighbor, Athena Meneses, said she spoke to Schilling at a local Cub Scout meeting, where Meneses had taken her own son and Owen.

Dawson told the Omaha World-Herald that police are convinced 'a murderer is not on the loose,' adding that the mother and son were not victims of an attacker. But the Schilling always called home and the excursions never lasted long. Her family grew worried when neither she nor Owen returned home, and her cellphone went unanswered. Officials said the bodies were not dumped into the lake, and they're not releasing any information as to the cause of the deaths. Meneses and her family moved to Plattsmouth about two years ago, just blocks from the Schillings. She said Owen was a playmate to her four oldest children, ages 6 to 14. Search efforts turned up nothing until May 20, when the bodies of both the woman and the boy were found near the Missouri River, south of the lake.

Overview for Tuesday's elections

The FBI and Council Bluffs police said autopsy results have confirmed that the bodies of two people found in a western Iowa state park are those of a missing Nebraska woman and her 10-year-old son. Someone was able to cut the zip tie off Schilling's neck quickly enough for her to recover. OMAHA, Neb. – Police say a Nebraska mom who disappeared last month with her son strangled the 10-year-old boy before strangling herself in the woods of an Iowa state park.

Since then, the two-time World Series champion with the Red Sox and three-time World Series champion overall has become a bit of a controversial figure. He was fired by ESPN in 2018 for sharing a transphobic meme to his social media page. That move came after Schilling had been suspended by ESPN for posting a meme that compared Muslims to Nazis.

But the woman always called home and past excursions never lasted long. Relatives have said it wasn't unusual for Schilling to surprise her children with short road trips to parks, zoos and other nearby attractions. Nine days after the discovery of the vehicle, a passer-by found the woman and boy's bodies in thick woods about a half-mile from where the car had been parked.

The World Herald reports that police don't have evidence of any foul play, but they're treating the case like a kidnapping. Charlotte and Owen Schilling were last seen in Plattsmouth, Neb., when Charlotte picked her son up from school, according to the Journal Star. If you’re in charge of handling the affairs for a recently deceased loved one, this guide offers a helpful checklist. A thief stole something from Charlotte Schilling's car a few years ago, but she had never been the suspect of any criminal investigation, Plattsmouth Police Chief Steve Rathman said. Neither had her husband, Carl, or their two other children, Lindsay and Tyler.

Schilling and her son were last seen in surveillance video from a convenience store near the park. The video showed Owen hugging his mom, and Schilling kissing her son on the head, and the clerk said nothing seemed unusual in the store. Relatives have said it wasn’t unusual for Schilling to surprise her children with short road trips to parks, zoos and other nearby attractions.

The Ultimate Alaska Cruise Packing List for 2024

what to bring on alaska cruise

While Alaska isn’t hot, it’s still easy to get dehydrated — especially if you decide to do a strenuous excursion like hiking. It’s a good idea to keep a water bottle with you on your trip. The cruise ships don’t have bottles for you to take ashore and bottled water isn’t always available if you get off the beaten path. Carnival ships sail to Alaska’s coastal Panhandle region where you’ll be able to shop in quaint seaside towns like Ketchikan and Skagway, plus take in harbor vistas in Juneau. The Panhandle, also known as Southeast Alaska, is actually a rain forest.

Waterproof Dry Bag

It stays on all the time and doesn’t blind you when you walk into a dark bathroom at 4am. There’s a disable switch so the alarm won’t accidentally ring if it gets bumped in your suitcase. Now I don’t have to double-check that my iPhone alarm is set every day or that I’ll hear it if the phone volume is off (yes you will). Don’t take a chance of losing those amazing Alaska memories. Whether you travel with a laptop or external drive, get in the habit of transferring and backing-up your day’s photos before you go to bed. Get one that can adapt to use with your smart phone and a camera.

Merrell Moab 3 Midi Waterproof Hiking Boot

The Alaskan outdoors can be quite wet, so protect yourself from mosquito bites by packing a bottle of bug spray in your suitcase. You might think because you won’t be lounging on the sand, you won’t need to pack some sunscreen for your cruise to Alaska. But keep in mind, you’ll be participating in many outdoor activities or standing out in the sun for a good amount of time while taking in glaciers and wildlife. Even if you’re covered up, you’ll want to make sure to pack a bottle of SPF to keep your face and neck safe from sun rays.

And a Few Things NOT to pack for an Alaska Cruise

what to bring on alaska cruise

Last year my daughter, who happens to love hiking and the outdoors, joined me on one of my Alaska cruises. I also bought a 3-pack of black socks, once again at Walgreens. I have a pair of sheer stockings/tights for dress-up to wear with the one black dress that I always bring along. You know…those extras that are sometimes forgotten…until you absolutely need them. If your ship doesn’t have a sliding glass dome over the pool, you may not need to pack a swimsuit at all.

On the warmest of days, shorts may be preferred whereas the coldest days may have you layering both leggings and jeans. While your daytime attire may be more relaxed, there are several opportunities to dress up while on board. Formal dinner nights call for cocktail dresses or gowns for women and tuxedos or suits for men.

I bought two of these Bago Daypacks…one in hot pink for the Caribbean and a black and grey one for Alaska. Also pack one pair of sneakers or super-comfortable walking shoes. Just make sure they’re broken in, have tread and not totally mesh. Next, you really should bring already-broken-in hiking shoes with a tread. They weren’t comfortable for me in the arch so back they went.

There will be moments when you’ll want to document your Alaskan adventures on your phone. Minimize the risk of getting it soaked when sailing near a waterfall or kayaking around a lake by bringing a cell phone dry case, which will keep the water out while still allowing you to use it. Sure, you can take pictures with your phone, but do you really want to photograph Alaska and its gorgeous landscapes and wildlife on a tiny phone? You’ll be thankful you packed your best camera on your trip to Alaska once you catch your first glimpse of a majestic glacier or humpback whale.

10 Best Alaska Cruises to Take This Summer, According to Experts - Travel + Leisure

10 Best Alaska Cruises to Take This Summer, According to Experts.

Posted: Mon, 12 Feb 2024 08:00:00 GMT [source]

Days are longer during the Alaskan summertime, which means you’ll have more sightseeing time, even at midnight. Trips range from seven to 11 days, depending from which port you’re sailing. Cruises to Alaska run from April through September, when the weather is most comfortable. There will be a lot of cruise activities and guided walks on land. Comfortable shoes rather than trainers will make such a difference to how much you enjoy these events, keeping feet warm and free from sores and blisters. There will be plenty of time to sit around doing nothing as part of your Alaska cruise, especially on sea days.

Walking Shoes

Pack a book, Kindle e-book, puzzle book or a pack of playing cards to enhance your day. Wear it inside or outside your jacket for extra warmth when sightseeing. When you don’t need it for thermal warmth, throw it over your shoulder as a fashion statement. Scarfs are also great for co-ordinating outfits and giving your limited cruise wardrobe a fresh look each day. While it will be pretty cold out, the cruise ship might have some steamy hot tubs to jump in.

You might be on a cruise, but you’ll find yourself on your feet more than expected. Getting ready and packing for an Alaskan cruise can be challenging, but well worth it!. Pou-Pourri is a “before you go spray” that works better than regular air freshener. Save space in your cruise cabin bathroom by bringing a hanging toiletry bag. Make sure to bring a fast charging portable phone charger on your Alaskan cruise. This will come in handy before, during and after your cruise as well.

Bringing a swimsuit on your cruise to Alaska might sound unnecessary, but remember, all of our ships have solariums with heated pools, spas, and hot tubs. Bring at least one swimsuit just in case you feel like taking a dip during your vacation. While Bonine is a considerably less drowsy formula than traditional Dramamine, it’s still not recommended for children under 12 — and it can still make you sleepy. An all-natural alternative that we always have in our bag is ginger.

When our marine biologist guide pulled a sea cucumber from the crystal-clear waters to show us, she squealed with delight when he offered to let her hold it. That's the kind of joy you cruise to Alaska to experience. This is not a cruise you want to sleep through — and even if that's your plan, you may have difficulty accomplishing it. Long hours of daylight, excursions and glacier viewings that start early and even your own fear of missing out can have you out of bed early and staying up later than you might on any other cruise.

Our opinions are based on having cruised big ships, small ships, and various routes, cruiselines, and times of year. But in our view, there's no substitute for working with an expert Alaska cruise agent. Carnival cruises to Alaska are designed to take you safely off the beaten track to see America’s last frontier. Alaska may be a different type of cruise vacation, but it’s one you and your family will happily never forget. The good news is, you can leave the heavy-duty winter coats and boots at home—easily removable, waterproof layers are best.

Hotels with Cruise Shuttles/Walking DistanceWe’re big proponents of staying a night or two in New Orleans given the number of things to do and see in the city. The New Orleans cruise port is located within walking distance of the Arts District and the French Quarter.

New Orleans, Louisiana

There is a refreshment stand serving coffee, cold drinks and snacks, as well as a souvenir stand located at the port.

New Orleans (Port NOLA Louisiana)

As a perk designed to entice you to stay, many hotels in the area will allow you to park at their hotel while you cruise for free or at a discounted rate to what you’d pay at the port. You’ll often need to find transportation back and forth from the port, but it’s a small price to pay for the considerable savings on parking. Independent Parking LotsIf you want to save some cash, you can instead park at one of the few independent parking lots offering cruise parking. Rates vary depending on the lot and time of year, but are usually around $15 per day.

Renting a car for just a few hours is a great way to getfrom the airport to the cruise terminal, and you don’t have to worry aboutparking anywhere during your cruise. Each terminal has their own parking area and there is a lot adjacent to the Julia Street Parking lot that provides parking for oversized vehicles (RVs, buses, etc.). These services offer coverage all around town and you can get a ride with just a few clicks on your phone. What's the Best Month to Cruise? Pros & Cons of Sailing Each Month of the Year

The cheapest times to cruise to the Caribbean coincide with the American school schedule, as well as hurricane season, which lasts from June 1 through November 30. Even though New England and Canadian cities begin to considerably cool down in October around the end of the season, the chance of seeing peak fall foliage usually brings a crowd. The beginning of the Bermuda cruise season usually begins in May, so prices will be lower due to it being the shoulder season.

Make every dollar go further by taking advantage of these strategies for finding the cheapest months to go on a cruise. She cautioned travelers booking nonrefundable deposits – which they may not get back if they have to change their plans – to be certain the reservation they make will work for them. But those booking refundable deposits "have nothing to lose," she said.

What is the best time of year to book a cruise?

These sailings are often the most popular, but “best” can quickly turn to “worst” when you face high prices and large crowds. The cheapest time to cruise is often when most travelers don’t want to go. You may find less ideal weather or some seasonal closures, but the lure of cheap fares and uncrowded ports might make you change your mind about what you consider the best time to cruise. Tourists flock to Europe in the summer, but the best time for a European cruise is in the late spring and early fall.

A cruise to Hawaii can be a more inexpensive way to island-hop and get a taste of several ports in this tropical paradise. The cruise season runs year-round, with sailings from the US west coast (only one ship, NCL’s Pride of America, runs seven-day cruises in Hawaii round-trip from Honolulu). Although hurricane season doesn’t affect Bermuda to the extent that it does the Caribbean, the chance of stormy weather can still drive cruise fares down. With schools back in session and cooler weather, booking for September through November can save you lots of money on your Bermuda vacation.

Crowds are fewer, and there are bargains to be had, especially on larger ships and Great Barrier Reef cruises that are available year-round. However, if we had our pick, we would suggest either April or October if you need to fly into a cruise port. The generally good weather and low prices combine to make it a cheap and easy time to sail. In this case the ‘shoulder’ months of May and September offer the lowest prices. Most cruisers make a decision to go on a particular cruise based on their schedule at home, primarily related to their work or school schedule.

Play enough and cruise lines will offer you sharply discounted cruises, sometimes for seemingly pennies on the dollar. Generally speaking, April, May, and September, the months that align the typical academic schedule, see the coldest temperatures of the cruise season. Another pro of repositioning cruises is the opportunity to have many sea days. This can be a great way to relax, recharge, and enjoy all the amenities on board the ship. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the ship, try the different restaurants and bars, and enjoy the entertainment. Even though there is the threat of cruising during hurricane season, if you are flexible you will be fine. Your ship may have to change its itinerary because of an incoming storm, but pack your sense of adventure and you will still be glad you got such a great deal. With two Norwegian Cruise Line ships dedicated to Hawaii cruising, you can explore the islands year-round. The best time to cruise Hawaii for good weather is during the summer and early fall when the islands get the least amount of rain. Which Cruise Line Should I Sail? The Definitive Guide for 2024

And in our experience the amounts can be substantial compared to the price of the cruise. Sure, it’s not necessarily a way to find a cruise for less money, but it is less money that comes out of your pocket for the vacation. Best Time to Cruise European Rivers: May - September

In some cases, heat waves and low rainfall can cause European rivers to be too low for ships to sail. Additionally, depending on where you're sailing, July and August may mean some local cafes and restaurants are closed for summer holidays. Peak season for European river cruises lasts from May through September. And if you're after the best of those European summer vibe, it's a hard time of year to top.

Outside of the Caribbean, the Mediterranean is one of the most popular places to cruise. The typical season begins around March or April and goes through November. The temperature remains warm throughout most of the year, though there may be an occasional cold front during the months of November through February, but they are short lived. That being said, Norwegian Cruise Line has begun sailing there more frequently, meaning you might be able to find a good deal just about year-round.

Tracking prices allows you to watch the rise and fall of cruise fares over time, so when the fare drops, you'll recognize the price as a deal and be able to pounce on it. This strategy is best if you plan to book early and aren't as concerned about the ship selling out immediately. If it's the latter, that's when you get last-minute deals on cruise ships with unsold cabins. However, even if that last-minute cruise is cheap, the 11th-hour airfare or pre-cruise hotel booking could eat into your savings. In the cruise industry, a last-minute booking is considered any cruise purchased after final payment is due, generally 60 to 90 days before sailing.

As you’ll see below, there are trade-offs with each time of year to sail. However, many of the potential downsides are manageable in our opinion — and shouldn’t deter you from taking a cruise when it fits your schedule and budget. I haven’t been on a cruise and always intrigued about the cheapest months to do it. I remember seeing my friend and her friends went to the Caribbean in October and they got a very good price.
